Freedom to Read
Overview:
The task was to raise awareness of a problem that the world faces today using a simple graphic image. I chose the topic of book banning in the US because it is becoming a serious issue with multiple famous books being banned from our public and school libraries, such as "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Of mice and men". I believe that we are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past if history is kept from us and banning books will do much more harm than good.
Research and Brainstorming

At the beginning, I was not sure of what I wanted to do as my symbol and I played around with a lot of concepts using books and such. It wasn't until I really thought about the task at hand and what freedom means that I incorporated the statue of liberty without her book as the image I wanted to go with. After that it was simply a process to get the right look of the statue and what colors to use. I freehanded and drew the statue in order to get all the details and added a background colored box to put emphasis on the missing book.

Process

I played around most trying to find a good place to put the text and what font to use. I wanted something that would stand out and work together with the image rather than exist alongside it. Then for the colors I wanted a nice contrasting color to the blueish green of the statue.
